Animal Portraiture

Mouth/Muzzle 
Mouths are the part of an animal that allow them to communicate, eat, protect, hunt, clean and express affection. Take a moment to observe how your animal uses it's mouth. Take notes in your sketchbook regarding the qualities, attributes and observations physically of the mouth.
Composition    
What is the relationship between the mouth, eyes and nose? Distances/proportions.
How far above or below from the horizontal midline?
Shape
What is the shape of the mouth? Triangular?
Does the mouth protrude from the head? 

Painting Demo
Palette:
Raw Umber
Ultramarine Blue
​Cadmium Yellow
Cadmium Red (medium or light)
Dioxazine Purple
Titanium White
Lamp Black

Brushes:
Small Flat
Small Bright
Small Round

Place color into exterior snout area beginning with underpainting. For demo, I used saturated blends of cadmium red, cadmium yellow mixed with white. Moving into the upper lip areas, introduce purple and burnt siennas for darker hues. Varying amounts of white. 

Block in dark areas of nose if connected and lip shadows. Place teeth in with whites and dry brush with a separate brush until blended with lip areas. 

Block in dark shadows of mouth between teeth.
Find shadows in tongue (if showing).

Back and forth between purples, blues, blacks and grays with dry brush around exterior lip areas.

Dry brush fur overlap
Darken snout area.
Make shape adjustments

Add Reflections
Blue/white adjustments
Whiskers
